Fourth largest of the eight islands that make up the Canaries archipelago, Lanzarote has a unique charm and personality of its own, and is the second most popular choice for visitors to the sub-tropical Atlantic Ocean islands, after big Sister Tenerife.
With a population of around 150,000 residents spread across 326 square miles, the island feels uncrowded, most notably around the spectacular Timanfaya National Park, where visitors will find an unworldly volcanic landscape, often compared to walking on the surface of Mars, and unsurprisingly selected as the backdrop for a host of well-known science fiction TV shows and movies.
Visitors to Lanzarote cannot fail to notice the influence of local artist César Manrique, whose ecologically minded work and lasting legacy of art which complements nature peppers the island. Manrique’s impact is also visible across the island’s architecture, as it was he who spearheaded a vision of low-level white-washed buildings designed to integrate with the natural geological surroundings and hot climate, which remains the dominant style of architecture today.
Alongside the volcanic black sand beaches typical of the Canary islands, Lanzarote also boasts a number of yellow sand beaches, most notably along the south-east coasts where the capital city of Arrecife and the most popular holiday resorts can be found. Most of these provide all the facilities a holidaymaker could wish for, but for those who prefer to get a little further off the beaten track, some beautiful remote and wild beaches can be found at the southern tip of the island in Los Ajaches National Park.
