A look back to where FlyDirect began

“We’ve come a long, long way together
Through the hard times and the good.
I have to celebrate you baby;
I have to praise you like I should”

Norman Cook, aka Fatboy Slim’s, famous lyrics sprung to mind this week as we prepare for FlyDirect’s busiest ever weekend of flying.

Back in 2009 – just 15 years ago – we launched a small programme of direct flights from Jersey to Malaga, using a Flybe twin-prop plane that took over 3 hours to fly to the Costa del Sol.

The following year, we operated our first flights to the Balearic Islands and haven’t looked back since. Switching from propellor planes to jets, working with Flybe, Volotea, Air Europa and most recently Smartwings and BA Cityflyer, we have carried over 50,000 islanders to the Mediterranean and Canary Islands.

We really have come a long, long way together. Dealing with economic crises, an Icelandic volcanic eruption (remember that?!) and of course, a global pandemic, has meant that we have experienced some turbulence along the way.

However, last week’s May Bank Holiday weekend, we will operate a record 8 direct flights from Jersey, Guernsey & the Isle of Man to Majorca, Ibiza, Faro as well as to our new destination, Split. That means we will be flying almost 800 islanders to the Med, for some early summer sunshine.

As always, alongside our airline partners, we would like to thank the teams at Air PartnerHotelbeds & Destination Services for their support, along with those at Ports of JerseyGuernsey Ports & Isle of Man Airport

Above all though, we would like to thank (and celebrate) our clients who have chosen to fly with us in the past or perhaps are trying us for the first time this year. We hope you enjoy your experience and please let us have your feedback – it’s important!
